Noam Chomsky’s theory on language acquisition

Noam Chomsky is, (0)………. many things, an American linguist and a cognitive scientist. One of Chomsky’s most prestigious achievements is his contribution to the field of linguistics, (9)……….. he revolutionised from the 1960s (10)…………. the 1990s with his theory on Universal Grammar.

Universal Grammar, Chomsky has posited that humans have an innate ability for learning languages, that is, every one of us, from birth, has an inherent ability to construct an infinite number of sentences (12)…………… using only a finite set of syntactic rules (13)……………… whichever native language(s) we speak.  

Other advocates of Chomsky’s theory on language acquisition have theorised on what’s called the Poverty of the stimulus (POS), which argues, (14)…………. children, when first exposed to a language, are not exposed to enough data to learn every part of their language and that the speech children are exposed to is consistent with many other grammars.
